A proven active strategy, now in an ETF with expert management and greater transparency.
VanEck has announced plans to convert its Emerging Markets Bond Fund from a traditional mutual fund into an actively managed ETF, with the transition expected to take place around October 6, 2025. The move is designed to make the strategy more accessible to investors, offering the same disciplined investment approach but with the added benefits of an ETF structure such as intraday trading, daily transparency, and greater tax efficiency.

The fund has a strong track record, delivering an annualized return of 4.1% over the past five years, well ahead of its benchmark at 1.3% and significantly outperforming Treasuries, which posted -3.7% over the same period. Since launching in 2012, it has consistently beaten its benchmark on both an absolute and risk-adjusted basis, ranking in the top tier of its Morningstar category across multiple time frames. As of July 31, 2025, the global investment team oversees about $435 million in assets.

The strategy will continue to be led by Portfolio Manager Eric Fine, alongside Deputy Portfolio Manager David Austerweil, Chief Economist Natalia Gurushina, and Senior Corporate Analyst Robert Schmieder. The team will maintain its high-conviction approach, investing in both sovereign and corporate issuers across U.S. dollar and local currency bonds.
“Emerging markets debt has outperformed U.S. and global bonds over the past decade, and we see that trend continuing given stronger fundamentals and higher yields,” said Eric Fine. “Our combination of quantitative screens and deep fundamental analysis has been key to our long-term success—and that won’t change as we transition to an ETF.”
For investors, the shift means easier access to a proven strategy that can offer both yield and diversification, without altering the fund’s core objectives.

“This conversion reflects our commitment to giving investors better tools to access attractive opportunities in emerging markets debt, while keeping the same philosophy and team behind the strategy,” added Ed Lopez, Managing Director and Head of Product Management at VanEck.
