Constructor University, one of Germany’s most respected private research institutions with a strong international reputation, brings top-tier expertise to the table. Leading the academic side of the initiative are Professor Dmitry Vetrov, a recognized authority in Bayesian methods, generative models, and deep learning, and Professor Hilke Brockmann, who heads the AIDE project exploring the societal and ethical implications of AI on trust and governance. Their combined knowledge aligns seamlessly with Sumsub’s mission to develop transparent and effective approaches to fraud prevention in the digital age.

The partnership carries a personal dimension as well Sumsub’s co-founder and CTO, Vyacheslav Zholudev, completed his doctorate at Constructor University. For him, this collaboration is not only about advancing research and technology but also about giving back to the institution that shaped his career. Sumsub is investing directly into the university’s academic programs by funding research, supporting scholarships, and fostering open innovation. The initiative will also give students the opportunity to work directly with Sumsub’s technical teams, gaining hands-on experience in building anti-fraud tools and developing real-world skills in digital security.

This comes at a critical time. Deepfake fraud and synthetic identity fraud are rising at alarming rates, with Sumsub’s data showing a 700% surge in deepfake cases in early 2025 compared to the previous year. Europe and Germany, in particular, have seen massive spikes in document-related fraud. These attacks are undermining trust in financial systems, healthcare, government services, and even everyday online interactions, making collaboration between academia and industry more urgent than ever.

According to Pavel Goldman-Kalaydin, Sumsub’s Head of AI and ML, joining forces with leading academic minds is essential to outpace fraudsters. He emphasized that while deepfake fraud continues to evolve in both quality and quantity, this partnership will bridge research and practice to develop defenses that society desperately needs. Constructor University echoed this sentiment, with Professor Dmitry Vetrov noting that the collaboration merges academic depth with industry expertise to create solutions that foster transparency, fairness, and trust in digital systems.
