The stablecoin giant commits to issuing USD₮ on Bitcoin and Lightning in the near future, leveraging RGB technology.

Tether is taking a major step forward by announcing plans to issue USD₮ on RGB, a next-generation protocol that lets users issue and transact digital assets directly on Bitcoin and the Lightning Network. The announcement has been warmly welcomed by the RGB Protocol Association, highlighting the growing opportunities for developers and institutions looking for private, scalable, and user-controlled asset rails on Bitcoin, the world’s most secure network.

Earlier this year, RGB reached mainnet readiness with its v0.11.1 release, giving developers the ability to issue and manage assets using client-side validation while anchoring proofs to Bitcoin transactions. This design keeps asset data off-chain, protecting privacy, reducing blockchain congestion, and enabling seamless integration with the Lightning Network.

Paolo Ardoino, Chief Exeutive Officer of Tether, highlighted the significance of the move, saying, “Bitcoin deserves a stablecoin that feels natural, fast, and private. By bringing USD₮ to RGB, we’re giving it a seamless new home on Bitcoin and taking another step toward a freer, more accessible financial future.

With USD₮ on RGB, users and service providers can hold and transfer USD₮ alongside Bitcoin in the same wallet, enjoy private transactions that don’t expose balances or flows on-chain, and leverage the Lightning Network for instant settlements via RGB’s transport extensions.

This innovation positions Bitcoin as more than just a store of value. It opens the door to stablecoins, tokenized assets, and programmable rights all while giving users full control. Adoption by major issuers like Tether is expected to drive broader wallet support, merchant adoption, and cross-chain liquidity, all without needing changes to Bitcoin’s underlying protocol.

For developers and integrators, technical documentation, reference implementations, and ecosystem updates are available through RGB’s official channels. The RGB Protocol Association, a Swiss non-profit, continues to guide the development, standardization, and adoption of RGB, inviting wallets, exchanges, payment processors, and infrastructure providers to join working groups that expand USD₮ and other Bitcoin-native assets across secure, private, and scalable rails.
